Understanding, Sympathetic or Compassionate?

At one time I thought I was compassionate, but I was;

  • occasionally understanding
  • sometimes sympathetic
  • and at times felt pity or sorry for me and others

Understanding is about comprehension, sympathy is about toleration and forgiveness (which is sort of judgmental), having pity means is judging another person as having or being less than even when it’s self-pity.

Compassion is kindness, not having unrealistic expectations of self or others, and accepting all as we are and loving them.

I can’t hang onto resentment, anger, guilt, self-pity, judgment or any negative characteristic out of balance, and expect to find compassion.

The world is changing at a fast pace in light of recent global health risks that have some folks in fear, others in denial and many in all over the place.

Some people have filled their grocery carts for a year’s worth of necessities and are now hunkered down to keep everyone away from them. While others have gone about their business not taking things seriously enough. There are some frozen in panic and anxiety that they risk even more health issues.

I am filled with compassion for all today. I may look like someone with their head in the sand, but I am not that. I understand the seriousness of what’s happening, do what I can to be healthy, then I manage my emotions by being mindfully aware of my thoughts.

It’s easier to go about my day self-isolated from most folks from a place of peace and self-compassion. I can have compassion for others by making myself available to those who may be struggling to find peace of mind or a new way of living and working in this time of upheaval.

You may choose this time as a great opportunity to take a deeper look at what you are doing in life. Time to see how you have been showing up in your life, your family, your community, your work.
